MISA article - Ashford match
The Christmas tree has been rudely undressed, sliced up awaiting the ‘green’ collection, reams of wrapping paper combine to clog the wheelie bin to overflowing, leftovers, not used in interminable curries and sandwiches, are, well, leftover and the distraction of the diversionary ‘derby’ has drifted into distant memory. Goodbye to 2007. But is it good riddance? Simply a ‘no’ if based on your team’s position and they sit proudly at the top of the league which means, of course, a landslide victory for the ‘yes’s’! But there is more to it than that this being a time to reflect on twelve months progress or not. The sight of the all-weather pitches carved into a corner of Hartsdown Park, the lighting towering above, is a beacon of hope, the start of a promise of much, much more. Good things come to those who wait we are led to believe; thus the stadium when finally emerging from the drawing-board into reality will be second to none, our aspirations fulfilled. The financial shenanigans that the club has been bedevilled with in recent years would appear to have dissipated. The drainage problems, which massacred the playing surface, seem to have been resolved aided by a relatively dry autumn. On the field the disappointment of sixth place joins the list of so many ‘what might have beens’ in the club’s history, no different to anywhere else really. As the club seek to stabilise, not just for the present but for the foreseeable future, we may have expected no more than a consolidation in the top half of the Ryman Premier this season. Surging into the top five in December had the more optimistic amongst us dreaming of more than a white Christmas, a play-off place suddenly beckoning, but a miserly haul of just one point from nine as we exited the year has dampened the enthusiasm. However with fifty-four points there to be won where there is a target there is hope. Sadly an unprecedented glut of injuries, illness and impending suspensions allied to the likely return of the impressive Ryan Peters to Brentford as his loan spell ends has decimated the squad. Has Robin been able to select the same side in consecutive games to date? All of this may prove to be too much of a burden to carry. But it’s a fresh start so let’s welcome 2008 for what it is, a new beginning.

The holiday fixtures were memorable for the flourish of red cards many relating to an outbreak of ‘two-footed disease’!’ The jumping in, studs up operation of a tackle appears to have returned with a vengeance and generally has received the ultimate sanction by alert referees. Perhaps the players responsible are aware that by carrying out these illegal acts they can grab their ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ as for certain the prying TV cameras at grounds allow such misdemeanours to be covered from 101 angles!

MISA have been asked by Margate F.C. to manage the two catering outlets within the ground and we are very happy to oblige. If any supporters have comments about facilities or products on offer please speak to a committee member or give me a ring, Keith Lewis, on 01843 226963. One issue we have already flagged up is the provision of an outlet serving drinks only which should avoid unwanted queues that some of you have had to face. More next time.

As I write we are just days away from completing the membership of the ‘200 Club’ when we shall be able to determine the prize money and the donation to MFC. Therefore if you have stuffed the application form in your pocket and forgotten to complete it there is just about time to do so. Please consider this last opportunity of joining. The draws will take place at the last match of the month during the season commencing on January 19th when Carshalton are the visitors.

The December quiz was an amiable affair albeit too few teams participating. The next one sees a return to ‘The Hartsdown’ on Friday 25th January commencing at 7.30 p.m. Food will again be included in the entry fee of £3 per head. The larger venue will allow more to compete so why not put a team, maximum of six, together and have a fun night. Give me a ring to book a table.

Harking back to Boxing Day a word of thanks is due to Barry Gardner for providing the sack of sweets which were distributed to the youngsters attending.

Football is what Saturdays are for, or is it the other way around?! That’s why you are here. You can all play your part in making it an even more enjoyable experience by encouraging the team which in turn lifts them. Give them that extra shout, it doesn’t hurt, and you may well find your day out is a richer adventure. Enjoy the game

MISA article - Ramsgate match
A warm welcome to one and all for this festive encounter between Thanet’s two professional football teams. This fixture is traditionally hard fought, competitive with no quarter asked nor given with this year the added spice of both sides being in with a shout of the play-offs. Thus the scene is set for a gladiatorial battle which I hope will wake you from the sluggish aftermath that Christmas Day inflicts on us all. Some of you may not have visited Hartsdown Park for some time so it is worth pointing out the changes that have occurred and others that are imminent, the building works specifically affecting the amount of covered terracing currently available. The construction of the five-a-side pitches, which opened for business this month, necessitated improvements to the bar and club shop as well as additional offices, the space required swallowing up the roofed area left of the social club. This is the first leg of the scheme to transform Hartsdown into a first-class stadium. I trust that the weather is as kind as is possible at this time of the year and that you don’t suffer too much discomfort particularly our friends from Ramsgate in the exposed ‘coffin end’. If the entertainment on offer today is to your liking then please return; there is no doubting that both Margate and Ramsgate need all the support they can get.

It was a freezing night when Welling visited for the Kent Senior cup-tie, and the hardy few scattered around the terrace, as if their spirits weren’t low enough, were stunned to hear that recently installed mascot ‘Ali-Margator’ had gone ‘missing’ with rumours of a possible kidnap. Indeed the internet was buzzing with speculation as to the green and yellow one’s whereabouts until shocking pictures were published showing his incarceration in an initially unknown cellar being subjected to cruel treatment. Urgent, forceful action was called for and this is where the crack SAS division of MISA came to the fore carrying out a well organized snatch raid which successfully returned ‘Ali’ to his rightful home fortunately none the worse for wear. He was back to his old self at the East Thurrock match; but ‘Ali-Margator’s’ movements are now monitored closely by CCTV so be warned!

Goalkeepers, don’t we just love them, never fail to steal the headlines, recently Billy McMahon featured on this page after a series of bad luck stories. Now if your name is Tanner and you patrol between the sticks the last thing you want is a ‘hiding’. Boom, boom! Unfortunately no such luck for young Sam in goal for Leyton, as the bottom club faced the top, where he let in a record-breaking eleven goals. At least he can take pride in the fact that if it hadn’t been for him it would have been more! Elsewhere Lee Shearer, yes the ex-Gate defender, donned the jersey in an emergency situation for Maidstone and excelled despite letting in two at Heybridge. What next?

David Beckham adorns the tabloids, his well-oiled and honed semi-naked body set to boost the profits of Armani. He certainly lived up to the tag of ‘goldenballs’, the first two syllables befitting the ingots that will swell his bank balance, the last syllable…..well you’ll just have to see the advert! But with MISA looking to produce a front cover for the fanzine being produced for January we have decided to look for a ‘Beck’s equivalent’; any prospective models, either from playing staff or from the supporters, are invited to a photo shoot after the match behind the outside catering unit rain, snow, ice and wind permitting!

Today is the last occasion that the form to join the MISA ‘200 Club’ will be available at the ground. Check out John Parker at the programme hut who will have a bundle. Otherwise they may be obtained from me, Keith Lewis, by ringing 01843 226963.

Many of you have taken a form and have promised to join. Please do so and send the form in as quickly as possible so that a January start can be made. Remember, half the cash collected goes in prizes and half to Margate F.C. Thanks are due to all who have signed up to date.

2007 comes to a close with hopes of achievement both on and off the field. In the see-saw world of football it may be that we are on the verge of the upward swing! As ever vocal encouragement is appreciated by the players as we pursue on-field success; let’s hear it louder than ever. Enjoy the game and a happy New Year.
